Equity vs. Equality #1

Business Diversity Helps Everyone

Elections and Opportunities

U.S. elections remind us and the international community that we still have very divergent views about systemic racial and gender bias in this country.

One of the biggest take-aways is that many people still believe that equality is enough to improve the depravities in our system.

Equality says that everyone has the same opportunities. Equity, instead, says that each person comes at an opportunity (like a grant or a job posting) from a different background. It’s a crucial difference.

Each of our backgrounds is determined by the great disparities in wealth and racial fairness within our economic, political and social systems.

Yet, when we take a hard look at systemic racism, at a country in which, today, the average white person have 10 (ten) times the wealth of the average black person, we know that taking that hard look helps more people. Black businesses are hiring. Latino/a businesses pay taxes that go to schools, roads, security, etc. etc. etc.

I examine these issues through the lens of business diversity more thoroughly in this report.

Questions and comments are always appreciated.
